The liberation theology crowd might be purporting to supply a replacement for what Catholics have felt is missing in their communion — just a theory.

Face it, it hasn’t been easy for the Roman church to back out of the church/state melange model. It hasn’t even been easy for Protestants to do it, and the first ones didn’t fall all that far from the tree, knowing no other kind of world.

What’s really missing, IMHO, is a world-independent kind of agape love. If that came back, virtually all Christendom would transcend denominational differences in a light whose sparkle has scarcely been seen since the bible-era church.

Get the right thing going and the wrong thing will be crowded out.

Give these guys AK-47s and 4WDs, and this is a vision of the next Thirty Year’s War, not the last.

“The Last Valley,” 1971, Omar Shariff, Michael Caine, written by James Clavell.

Watch the first one or two 12-minute segments, or the entire film. We are going to live through horrors on this level or worse before the balance is restored, if ever, and probably not in our lifetimes or our childrens’ lifetimes.

This is our future, I very sadly believe. Before the light returns there will be a lot of dark.

(And give the attackers crescents instead of crosses.)

But then we go to church and we want comfortable seats, free day care, free free-trade perfect-blend coffee, and lots of paid staff. Our pastors won’t work a tent-making job so we have to pay them a six-figure salary (because they did, after all, go to seminary and they have a Masters or Doctorate).

And we wonder why our churches seem like a business. (And I’m as guilty as anyone.)
