The problem is too many of the other 14 candidates stayed in WAY too long - siphoning enough votes so that neither Trump or Cruz have a clear mathematical shot at 1237.

I disagree. Trump is polling very well in the Northeast States. He took Massachusetts back in March with 49.3% of the vote. Most the remaining states are winner take most with thresholds which make them pseudo winner take all. Trump will be in great position by the end of April.
