When looking at the two pictures then and now of the community it looked like one side of the street had been demolished. Do you know how or why?

Probably failed “urban renewal” from the 60/70’s era, although I would have to do a search to find out for sure. Many historic downtowns in upstate New York were seriously tampered with, funded by the federal bulldozer in the name of urban renewal in the 60’s and ‘70’s.
Any Romans care to add to this/set me straight if this is not the case?
