I’m a US Citizen, born here; 30y ago I was temporarily living in Canada and met a British girl living in Canada. We had a child whom we assumed was Canadian based on his Canadian birth. When we all moved back to the US when my son was 5, we applied for a green card for him which he still goes by. He feels that he’s a dual citizen, but Canadian first due to being born there. Could he trade in his green card and do nothing else and run for president of the US? It’s almost the same as what Cruz is doing.

I have a cousin like your son. He grew up in Canada, and has thus far, opted to be a Canadian citizen. His parents were American citizens, at the time of his birth in BC.

But none of that suggests “natural born citizenship.”

I'm surprised INS gave your son a green card. You should go for US citizenship. You'll have to produce evidence of your citizenship, your son's parentage, and other relevant facts. Birth out of wedlock requires the father to "prove" more, compared with birth in wedlock (different section of naturalization law), but if the circumstances of his birth fit the law, then by all means, get him US citizenship. He'll be a dual citizen, lots of advantages to that.

As far as eligible to run for the presidency, or hold the office, I'd say the answer to that depends on what one means by "eligible." Nobody is going to check his credentials, so in that sense, he's eligible. I don;t think you need to go any farther than that, if he's politically inclined and connected. The law is not relevant. The only things that matter are action and inaction.

Yes, he could. Get of your hind quarters and get his citizenship squared away.
