J. Frank Dobie (1888-1964)was the folklorist from Texas for many years. In one of his many books he uses words that were accepted many years ago to describe this. I’m sure you can figure out the words. It isn’t about being late to an event. It is about slaves being given a task and making a minimal effort to accomplish the task in their own sweet time. They would work on it but would take much longer to accomplish than reasonably expected.
Well to be honest, I’m all in favor of slaves slaking off as much as they could possibly get away with — they certainly had ever moral right to do so.
