The above link is to a rather long (but interesting) article after the failed Romney campaign. The writer blames much of it on the Republican nomination process that we have now that slogs on for so long making the nominee bruised, bloody and broke by the time of the REAL campaign.

He argues going back to the pre-1972(?) way of nominating Republicans which was via caucus type elections - and getting an early consensus on the nominee.

This long drawn out garbage also gives entirely too much power to the media and the parties, and not to the voters.
