As to the blinders, I can't disagree with you. But still, I think the situation is much worse, to wit:
The apparent paranoia and self-deception of some of these folks is like nothing I've ever seen, and their ability to use pretzel-like illogic is simply astounding. It would seem to border on mass hysteria. Maybe it's what Edmund Burke meant by the term metaphysical madness.
