Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer predicted that the Republican Party would most certainly collapse if Donald Trump is denied a presidential nomination at the convention in July.
In his latest column for the Washington Post, Krauthammer said if Trump does not lock up the nomination before the convention he has the most delegates but needs a majority it is possible the party will coalesce around an alternative and the billionaire's supporters will walk away, leaving the party in shambles.
"And if Trump loses out, a split is guaranteed," wrote Krauthammer. "In Trump's mind, he is a winner. Always. If he loses, it can only be because he was cheated. He constantly contends that he's being treated unfairly. He is certain to declare any convention process that leaves him without the nomination irredeemably unfair. No need to go third party. A simple walkout with perhaps a thousand followers behind will doom the party in November."
Trump has insisted that if he has the most delegates, even if it's less than half of those needed to win the nomination, he should be granted the nomination. But party rules allow delegates at a brokered convention to re-vote to elect a candidate who they believe to be most likely to beat the Democratic nominee in a general election.

you don’t need to be in gop in your state to vote in primary?
Here is the map of Senators up for reelection. There are many more Republicans up for reelection then there are Dummycrats.
Sauerkraut acts as if Trump only claims to be treated unfairly. What a jerk Fox, other networks, Levin, Beck, Rush, Red State, on and on have beaten the Anti Trump message daily. Tbe GOPe has met more than once to do stop Trump planning and he is supposed to believe they treat him fairly. Even Obama trashes him.
One story about Cruz and there is a vicious meltdown by his supporters on FR. It is hourly trashing of Trump by certain posters here. This whole election has professed anti establishment defending Cruz taking on the Bush cabal. Never have I seen a GOP primary focused on stopping the frontrunner instead of trying to elect someone to stop the dem.
Cruz does their bidding, divides conservatives, stops Trump, wins the nomination at the convention, Trump supporters bolt the Party, Cruz loses the election, GOPe blames conservatives.
Refusing to vote for Cruz, if he’s the nominee, is NOT a “vote for Hillary.”
Cruz has NO chance of beating her. None. ZERO.
The guy has less charisma than Richard Nixon and has absolutely NO appeal to anyone except the far right (and I can’t even imagine what THEY see in him). He has no cross-over appeal whatsoever. I don’t even see how that’s arguable.
While I’d hate to see Hillary win (obviously), I can’t convince myself that MY vote would make the slightest difference since I believe that there’s NO chance that, even with it, Cruz would ever beat her.
No, now it is also the Trump voters vs the Cruz voters, who think that winning a convention fight when their candidate had no chance to win the majority of delegates, is acceptable behavior.
I would vote for Cruz.
I would vote for Trump.
If the GOP puts up some “unifying” yutz, I’m outta here.
All the polls show Cruz doing a heck of a lot better against Clinton than Trump.
The last one, McClatchy/Marist on Thursday had Clinton beating Trump by 9 while Cruz ties her.
But the Trump people only believe the polls they like.
Not going to happen.
If Cruz and Trump were battling head to head and neither could win the majority, then a convention battle would be needed.
However candidate who is way behind the frontrunner and cannot win the majority is suppose to step aside, not plot to win at the convention.
The republican party will collapse if Trump doesn’t get the nomination? That almost makes me hope Trump loses.
Only problem is that currently Trump does not understand how the system works...
So.. if he does not win it per the rules, but thinks he should have. will he flip out?
honestly, we don’t know what the rules will be at this point. we can only go by the last ones.
I won’t vote for Cruz since he won’t win the majority of delegates and only is attempting to stop Trump from getting the majority and win at the convention.
That ‘Ol yellah Dog over there before HRC
So I'm guessing then that you have no problem with those who say they would never vote for Trump, since they believe the same thing you believe, just with the other candidate.
That’s what we’re doing ... starting our own party ... take it or leave it.
It really pains me to see what's going on here is all. I'll admit that I've let me emotions get the better of me recently but we've got to keep our heads.
I prefer Trump. I think he's the only R candidate that can beat Hitlery. I haven't missed an election since I voted for Reagan at the age of 19 in 1980. I just don't think I can walk away.
They really handle being in the majority quite poorly because all they are is techocrats.
They have no vision on what to do with the power they have.
They just want to keep control of the Party apparatus.
However, like the Whig Party, they won't know they are dead until it is too late.
Think of all the money the GOP would make with a Hillary presidency!
Think of how popular the conservative talk shows would be!
The GOP likes to be in the minority and the status quo.
That is why they fear Trump.
They feared Reagan and Goldwater!
This is a Party that only exists to exist, it doesn't have any vision to actually change anything.
In Maine, it is possible to make a party registration the day of the primary election.
