Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer predicted that the Republican Party would most certainly collapse if Donald Trump is denied a presidential nomination at the convention in July.
In his latest column for the Washington Post, Krauthammer said if Trump does not lock up the nomination before the convention he has the most delegates but needs a majority it is possible the party will coalesce around an alternative and the billionaire's supporters will walk away, leaving the party in shambles.
"And if Trump loses out, a split is guaranteed," wrote Krauthammer. "In Trump's mind, he is a winner. Always. If he loses, it can only be because he was cheated. He constantly contends that he's being treated unfairly. He is certain to declare any convention process that leaves him without the nomination irredeemably unfair. No need to go third party. A simple walkout with perhaps a thousand followers behind will doom the party in November."
Trump has insisted that if he has the most delegates, even if it's less than half of those needed to win the nomination, he should be granted the nomination. But party rules allow delegates at a brokered convention to re-vote to elect a candidate who they believe to be most likely to beat the Democratic nominee in a general election.

Sometimes Krauthammer is right. This is a very, very divisive election. It seems to me that if anyone but Trump is our nominee, we will lose. Cruz simply has no charisma.
And we don’t want a lying, sneak who can’t win the primaries but has to do attempt to highjack the nomination by stealing delegates instead of winning them.
If you would never vote for Cruz, then you don’t belong in the Republican party. If you’re that far off from conservative ideology, then you must be closer to Hillary and Bernie and you should switch parties to be more true to yourself.
Oopsie. In my post 117, I included several FR links. In the interest of full disclosure, I should have pointed out that the link on bound/unbound delegates is my own writing.
“If Trump falls 50 or so bound delegates short and has not made the effort http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/3418672/posts?page=16#16 to get that many of the unbound delegates to support him, he deserves to lose.”
My apologies.
You can “seem” all you want but all the general election polls show it’s Trump who is the weakest candidate. And it SEEMS to me based om everything I’ve seen that those polls are totally accurate.
Trump would be expected to drop out if he was in the same situation as Cruz is, not plan to win a convention fight by denying Cruz the majority.
Cruz is not a true conservative, because true conservatives look at the spirit of the laws and not the just their letters.
True Conservatives do whatever they can to get Consevatives, not limousine liberals, into the Whitehouse. Go Cruz!
“If you would never vote for Cruz, then you dont belong in the Republican party”
Haven’t been for years!
I don’t care what you label me, for me , Trump is the only way. I would vote for a pig before I vote for anybody else. Can’t wait the primary comes to California.
“Krauthammer: GOP split ‘guaranteed’ if Trump loses nomination”
More stupid and irrelevant click bait from the Kraut. What if Cruz and Trump join forces and their delegates pass a resolution to dump the GOP rules committee and appoint a new rules committee. Nobody is talking about that possibility. That simple resolution could throw the entire traitorous GOPe overboard, and there isn’t squat the GOPe could do about it.
The Cruz/Trump delegates could also declare Rove and his gang of crony fascists as traitors and throw them out of the convention.
Play the cards right, and we are on the verge of taking over the GOP.
Wrong, Cruz had massive grass roots support and hugely successful fundraising because of it. He would have the nomination locked up now if not for the undocumented Democrat Trump blocking him in a bid to help get his friends Billary elected. Cruz would’ve won Iowa and then went onto win the South, the Midwest, etc. Bush never had a chance. Rubio would’ve stayed in longer but not prevailed.
Then I hope your state prevents you from voting in our primary from now on if they don’t already.
I can certainly see the similarity between that option and your chosen candidate.
Quote:
“Go, please. Vote Democratic, or create your own stupid little third party that will max out with about 16% of the vote, and win nothing in Congress either. Don’t let the GOP door hit you where the good Lord split you.”
And go we will, Mr. Rove.
I'll take that as an admission that you are still in chains on the RINOpublican Plantation, bowing and scraping to the Massa.
We've set up an Underground Railroad to help RINOpublan slaves that muster the courage to leave and stand like men.
PM me, when you've had enough.
Says who? He already answered even before you asked the question, in the post you quoted: the spirit behind the rules.
And I add: the tradition. When candidates were eliminated mathematically from the first ballot, they dropped out to not make a mess of a convention which the voters won’t put up with. Romney dropped out to let McCain cleanly get the formal number. But now Kasich is blocking Trump preparing the way for an illegitimate Paul Ryan or most likely Romney nomination.
And I add: the voters. You mess up the convention and steal it from the candidate with easily the most assigned delegates on the first ballot, the voters won’t show up after seeing such travesty.
“Trump’s plan from the beginning was to give his very good friend Hillary Clinton the presidency.”
That is such nonsense! And you know it! Why not say something bordering on intelligent?
“So if Cruz is the nominee, you would not vote for him vs. Hillary?? Interesting. . . .”
I’m there too! Cruze is just the latest reincarnation of “the sleazy, get elected at any cost because I have a huge ego, I’m a Haaavaad Lawyaa, it’s my turn and I think the presidency is mine” candidate! And the idea of listening to that reprehensible, self-serving jerk’s voice for four years is almost as unbearable as having to hear Hillary “cackle.”
And Cruz would have lost to Hillary. He was born in Canada to parents of murky citizenship, and that’s a huge liability going up against the Clinton Machine. Add in his sleazy Elmer Gantry impersonation and his Mr. Haney voice, not to mention his Grandpa Munster face, and there’s a winning combination....said no one, ever. He may have a “brilliant mind,” which Obama also reportedly has (snicker), but Cruz is unelectable nationally because the majority of voters are shallow and superficial.
