There is a legal precedent labeled “fighting words” where actions taken by the recipient target of such a verbal attack may have their physical reaction dismissed in a court of law as a mitigating or extenuating circumstance.
Actually, the last I looked into it, “fighting words” wasn’t operative in many places/states.
