The Theology of Ted Cruz: Questions raised by the candidate’s God-and-country vision
Christianity Today ^ | APRIL 1, 2016 | John Fea

Posted on 04/02/2016 3:41:01 PM PDT by BlackFemaleArmyColonel

On the Sunday morning before this year’s South Carolina primary, Dr. Carl Broggi, the pastor of Community Bible Church in Beaufort, turned over his pulpit—emblazoned with the Protestant watchword “sola scriptura,” to GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz. I am not sure if it is fair to call Cruz’s speech that morning a “sermon.” The candidate did not open up a biblical text and carefully explain its meaning in the way that I am sure Dr. Broggi had been trained to do at Dallas Theological Seminary and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Cruz did mention a few verses from the Bible during his message, but they were applied less to the spiritual lives of the souls in attendance that morning and more to the character of the United States of America as Cruz understands it. Let’s face it—this was a stump speech.

The Texas senator’s message was lifted from an old playbook. For nearly 400 years Americans have been conflating the message of the Bible with the fate of the country. Ever since the Puritan John Winthrop said that the Massachusetts Bay Colony was a “city on a hill” Americans have seen themselves as God’s chosen people—a new Israel with a special destiny.

Cruz is a master at fusing evangelical Christianity and presidential politics. When he tells the men and women at Community Bible Church that “weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5), and promises them that “morning is coming,” it is unclear whether he is talking about God’s comfort in times of trial (as the psalmist intended) or Ronald Reagan’s famous “morning in America” campaign slogan. When he refers to the “great spiritual awakening” that he sees pervading the country, is this a revival meant to save souls or save America as a nation?

The slight difference being, of course, that Cruz is talking about bombing (carpet bombing isn't the correct term, more like shock and awe type bombing, as he's explained many times now) large areas that ISIS currently occupies, who's inhabitants they are oppressing and murdering, and whom ISIS is drawing its strength from. Such bombing has a distinct strategic purpose.

BTW if ISIS held my neighborhood I'd rather take my chances with America doing everything possible to eradicate them, including leveling the place.

Exactly. Ted is a Pentecostal who is into dominionism. He along with his father are into praying in tongues. Paul who wrote both I and II Corinthians is very critical of the practice and, in fact; he continued to speak sarcastically about tongues and how foolish and pointless it was to speak in gibberish. He said-what virtue is there in praying to God or praising God without understanding? No one can “Amen” such nonsense.

Sorry you have missed the last several weeks’ discussion, as “an open” or “brokered” convention is actually an attempt o “steal” the convention from Trump. To be clear, if he gets 1237 delegates , which is 50% + 1, he wins the nomination on the first ballot. If he does not, then he must successfully horse trade to get to 1237 on the 2nd or subsequent ballot, just like Cruz, in an open convention.

If that’s all you have on Cruz he comes out smelling like a rose. Imagine putting just as much effort into a negatives list on Trump. The lists that are out there look pretty horrific. Well, maybe we can agree on this: may the best man win! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

And Christian wonder why our world is in such a hot mess... when we take upon ourselves the exact same demeanor as the terrorists, then what is there to distinguish us from the terrorists? Or is it that you do not believe the words of Christ who said to love our enemies, do good to those who hate us and pray for those who persecute us.

And please, do not come back with His words telling the disciples to go buy swords. In context, there were 11 of them, they said to Christ, ‘we have 2 swords’ and He said that was enough. This is NOT a message of a weapon in the hand of every man to do battle against ones enemies.

And please, do not come back with His words saying that if a man had known the thief was going to break into his house he would have watched and not allowed it. This was not a message giving authority to kill an intruder at any time, it was a message of a man letting heresy enter his house, thereby destroying his household spiritually. The context of the entire chapter of Matthew 24 is talking about false prophets and false messiahs. Do not allow them to enter your homes!

It's time for Christians to wake up... and we are, slowly but surely, the delusion of 2Thess 2 is being eroded from those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.

Shalom

You are either incorrect or lying; Cruz is a Baptist. Baptists are not Pentecostal.

Christ's words were meant for individuals in the conduct of their own lives and relations.

You aren't really suggesting we as a nation turn the other cheek to ISIS, are you?

If I may add, real speaking in tongues is the gift of speaking actual foreign languages without training or the spiritual phenomenon of being heard in the listener’s native language while the speaker is speaking his own language. The Apostles received this gift to spread the Gospel and as any spiritual gift, is given for the glory of God and not the individual.

Speaking foreign languages without training can also be a sign of demonic possession which is why the Church should tread carefully and discern each individual case.

He doesn’t sound like any sort of Baptist with which I’m familiar, and I’m being serious, that’s not a slam. I just don’t understand his denomination at all.

I am not a mind reader... the unidentified 'he' required me to asked who the 'he' was. What this has to do with Cruz using Jesus as costume jewelry is beyond me.

Cruz and Trump agree far more than 80% of the time (see my tagline from Ronald Reagan). They should be friends and allies, and we should treat both of them as such. I don’t expect some individuals to listen at all, but I hope to keep that thought in the back of everyone else’s minds.

Note: Trump is a whole lot better off with Cruz and Kasich in the race than in a two-person race where the anti-Trump vote would not be split. I’ll be voting for Trump, but I want Cruz to stay in the race.

When have the ships & military planes of ISIS stood at our borders and threatened us as they are doing in the Middle East where they were born & bred? When has Al Queda/ISIS ever formed a unified military, complete with uniforms and well marked military ships & aircraft so to distinguish them as being a legitimate military force? A legitimate military force also has a nation & borders with which it protects, so where is this nation of the Al Queda/ISIS military?

As a nation, according to the doctrines of the men who fought and shed their blood to form this nation, we are not to use our military to intervene in the civil affairs of other nations. There was allowance for support through the selling of weapons to other nations so they could protect themselves, but we were not to ally ourselves with other nations so to send our military to fight for them. In this, Trump is 100% spot on with the military doctrines of our founding fathers & the US Constitution that was ratified to secure our borders, not the borders of all the nations of the world.

And I am sorry if you do not like this, however, it is the truth & I prefer to live the truth and not the lies & myths that are promoted by the ignorant masses who are too lazy to actually learn history so not to repeat its mistakes.

So.. competing for remaining delegates is tantamount to “denying the presidency” to Trump? Since when is Trump entitled to the presidency?

But now he demands the nomination be handed to him with less than 50% of the delegates!!

Where do you come up with such bold-face lies?? tell me when and where Cruz did that.. and , by the way, the Penna. Supreme Court ruled yesterday that Cruz was a natural born citizen and eligible to be one the ballot:).

Thanks for posting. I found this an interesting read....as I did the one done on Trump.

The Theology of Donald Trump

"Trump reveals, in short, that for many evangelicals, the word evangelical means something that many increasingly do not recognize as properly Christian, much less evangelical."

Seems the stories from Christian Today consider Cruz's faith as "old school" theology and Trump's as "new school" theology.

I see. Perhaps you can explain how this comports with Trump’s stated intent to kill the families of terrorists.
