Two days after GOP presidential contender Donald Trump caused a firestorm after walking back his statement that women who have illegal abortions should receive some form of punishment, he said during another interview that abortion laws are set, and they should be left that way until changed.
In an interview on CBS Face the Nation the broadcast of which will be aired on Sunday Trump again attempted to clarify his views to moderator John Dickerson.
When asked by Dickerson from a pro-abortion perspective What would you do to further restrict access to abortion? Trump responded, The laws are set now on abortion and thats the way theyre going to remain until theyre changed.
A question was asked to me. And it was asked in a very hypothetical, Trump explained about his prior MSNBC interview with Chris Matthews. And it was said, Illegal, illegal. Ive been told by some people that was an older line answer and that was an answer that was given on a, you know, basis of an older line from years ago on a very conservative basis.
When Dickerson mentioned a prior Bloomberg interview during which Trump reportedly said he believed abortion should be banned after a certain point in pregnancy, Trump replied, I wouldve preferred states rights. I think it wouldve been better if it were up to the states. But right now, the laws are set .At this moment, the laws are set. And I think we have to leave it that way.
Do you think abortion is murder? Dickerson asked. After considering the question for several moments, Trump responded, I have my opinions on it, but Id rather not comment on it.
You said you were very pro-life, Dickerson followed up. Pro-life means that
abortion is murder.

Before Justice Scalia died, we were ONE justice away from overturning Roe v. Wade.
The only thing that is set is God’s Word. It is settled in heaven and cannot be changed. A USSC decision can be changed.
The abortion debate is being fought and won in many of the states, where the battle belongs. The states are far more effective in affecting change.
Most meaningful pro-life legislation is being blocked by Roe v. Wade. Trump is pro baby killernand so is anyone who supports him.
Nor should he. We have a porous border that needs to be plugged. We have an economy on the brink of collapse. Our military is abused, misused and ill equipped. Our vets are tossed aside like used tissue. Islamic terrorism needs to be killed dead in its tracks. Our government spends way more than we can afford and needs to be held accountable. Those are some of the problems we face and that President Trump will address.
Now, back to the social issues. The biggest impediment to fighting these problems is that political correctness destroys anyone who disagrees with it. Donald Trump has shown that political correctness can be defeated. It's up to us to take the lead and solve these societal ills. It's time for the People to put up or shut up. The PC crowd is a small minority. Will we stand as a community and say enough is enough? Or will we demand a political leader mouth platitudes to ease our discomfort for failing to do what we should be doing?
I have to look into it again but there was a Constitution seminar for pastors, at my church a while back informing them of what they can and can’t do and say. They can do a lot more than they apparently are willing to do. I call them cowards. The former pastor of our church was not a coward but when he had to retire for health reasons his replacements have not lived up to his standards. Some of the people I go to church with are trying to carry on his legacy, me included. Not in running for office, but getting involved in the community affairs (speaking for myself) others have run for office successfully. But for the most part the church has let itself be shut down. There is very little boldness.
“There is nothing wrong with Trump stepping on his big dock. It is how he gets to his yacht.”
Well, that’s a relief. I was afraid he was stepping on his duck.
Who will stand athwart them yelling stop at a time when many are not inclined to do so? Trump?
So we should just give up? That would be easy, wouldn't it? Public opinion of abortion has also changed significantly over the years. It's the most important social issue of our time and you want to quit?
Nice, thanks for the references. :)
To curtail or eliminate abortion, hearts must be changed not laws. Women will never give up what they have now legal abortion.
Bring it back to the states and change hearts, that’s the only way to deal with this. Americans will never support a ban on abortion at the fedgov level.
Thats quite an insignificant sentence for murder, dont you think?
When you consider that a large number of young women who use abortion for birth control do so because they sincerely believe that it is *not* killing and is no different than any other kind of birth control--then the wisdom of such a punishment becomes apparent. First time offense, she is mandated to learn the truth about abortion. Second time offense, she goes to prison or something--on the second round, she cannot claim ignorance.
I would make it a mandatory requirement for the abortionist to discuss the facts of fetal development (not the lies they typically tell if specifically asked), and to show the woman the ultrasound of the baby before getting her to sign any papers. (Despite what pro-aborts claim, sonograms are routine prior to abortions--the abortionist uses them to determine the size of the baby in order decide on the method to kill the baby.) And then I would make it mandatory for the abortionist to show the baby to the woman afterwards.
The abortion industry thrives only because its customer base does not truly understand its product. I think that if young women were educated about abortion, the abortion industry would lose a lot of business.
Roe was a court opinion, an immoral, unconstitutional court opinion. So, by every natural law, constitutional principle our free republic is built upon, it doesn't need to be "overturned." It simply needs to be ignored, as the legal nullity that it is.
I ran for president four years ago, and said exactly that. I'm running again this year, and my message has not changed.
The supreme law of our land absolutely requires equal protection for the right to life of every single person, in every jurisdiction.
What we need are chief executives, legislators, and judges who will keep their sacred oath to provide that equal protection.
>>> Far more women would keep their unborn if their partner was man enough to commit, marry and support them. Far more males would be MEN if held to account informally and formally and the perverse incentives for single motherhood were abolished.<<<
Forcing men to do what they don’t want is the answer? Men are rejecting marriage and responsibility for more reasons than consequence free sex. Look no further than the sea of men 35+ who have had their lives wrecked by divorce. Their money, their homes and their children are all gone. Men are powerless to stop a woman from ripping his kids away from them. The courts will almost always give custodial custody to the mother. And they do very little when the mother does all she can to ruin the father’s chance of a healthy relationship with his kids.
Guilt free sex is how men can cope without getting married. But I think it’s all the men most of us know who have been ruined that is the reason men are skeptical to start with.
Tough. The next president will appoint 3, maybe 4, justices to the USSC. Public support for abortion has been dropping. The right court could send it back to the states in the next 4 years. Many states would become pro-life and put an end to the mass murder.
Defeatism leads to defeat. I'm thankful that the pro-life movement is not led by defeatists. You should join them.
maybe single issue voters should focus on fighting social issues from the bottom up (state and local legislators are closer to home and parents and churches need to do their jobs on educating the young in morality) instead of only voting for someone you think will settle social issues from the top down ( especially if he makes promises for 4 or more years that he is pledged to do so- with no results except fine speeches)
The leader at the top should focus on what the Constitution specified he should do
Keep us safe from enemy attack (including economic and cyber attacks); making wise decisions regarding the general welfare (our economy is going to nosedive soon if not within month of the next president taking office, as Trump knows and has stated); and free the citizens from the oppressive tyranny of excessive govt regulation -
heck I’d just settle for someone who respects the people and being an American and is proud of it - and then go from there. Its been a long time since we woke up every day knowing the US President respected us and the country. The scorn and arrogance of Obama for ALL of us has been an oppressive and heavy burden that weighed us all down
So yes I want to quit
Quit squandering a solid prospect for structural changes in our government, a sweep out of old entrenched corruption and ineptitude, over pie in the sky social issues that can be addressed from the bottom up
And no matter what polls say, in the hearts of many people we know Cruz is unelectable. As the primary results show
The pro life movement hasn’t even been brave and smart enough to support Trump in facing the ultimate question now that its out there
If abortion is illegal are the women who have them going to to be criminally punished?
Instead they grab the pitchforks and go after Trump for blurting out the obvious honest answer, forcing him to retrench.
Answer the question straight. Yes or no. Then see how many people follow you up the hill. You are afraid to say yes women will be criminally punished- why? Search your own souls. Is government really the answer to this social issue?
Defeatism is everywhere. Conservatism used to win but with allies like you, it's no wonder we're twisting ourselves into pretzels trying to convince ourselves that Trump is a conservative.
The pro-life movement isn't comprised of single issue voters. They are not monolithic any more than evangelicals are. That you try to marginalize the pro-life people is unfortunate, but it is to be expected when you will compromise so much more in your misguided effort to predetermine winners and losers. When the polls favor Trump you guys are up and down these threads preaching it as gospel. When the polls show Trump losing to Hillary, or if they show his negatives to be the largest in the history of negatives, you guys are all over the threads calling them tainted.
I'll absolutely vote for Trump if he's the nominee but don't try and tell me he's all of a sudden become a conservative and will govern that way, and please don't tell me that conservatism can't win when the history proves otherwise. You're trying just a little too hard.
” Only in liberal la la land does Untied States mean just federal government “
Ding Ding we found a winner in the stupid contest.
This guy believe the President of the United States is not just head of the United States, but of all the 50 states governments and all the thousands of local governments.
You must have grown up in Europe and are unaware of how this country is actually set up.
In Europe, you get one vote, for a party that controls all federal, state and local elections. That is not the way America is set up. We have federal, state and local elections that are not dependent upon one another.
Please do not vote in the upcoming election until such time you can read the history of this country and some civics books. We have enough idiots who cannot name Supreme Court Justices or Vice Presidents.
