In the era before Roe v Wade women weren’t prosecuted for getting abortions, only abortionists were charged with a crime.
The attitude of the law was that women were victims of abortionists. In the entire 20th century there were exactly two cases of women being charged being involved in a criminal act by getting an abortion.
Chris Matthews was counting on the fact that no one, Trump included, would remember what American law was when abortion was illegal. The majority of people posting here at FR have no idea what the law was. So both the Democrats and their pals in the GOPe have been able to gin up a controversy out of nothing.
