Thanks, for explaining. It really explains how these old lifers are almost impossible to kick out. If nothing else Trump has made people actually look at our election rules and set up. Its much more involved than most think. (Me being one)
You’re welcome. It helps to understand that primaries/caucuses are something that the parties choose to run. They are not obliged to hold a primary.
They do it because they do value how the voters decide (and want voters in the general). But if the voters do not decide, there have to be ways.
It’s ultimately up to the party to decide its nominee.

Thank you for your very reasoned post, I appreciate that you are learning about the election process.
I would like to point out that one of the most valuable offices is as the party leader in the Senate. McConnel has controlled that office for a couple of election seasons now and as a result we have all had to deal with Rinse Priebus for far too long. In addition, as the top Republican Senator, he has been able to control millions of dollars of campaign moneys.
We were very close to ousting him in the last election with a very good Conservative candidate named Matt Bevin. That candidate just one the Governorship of KY in this past KY election and I am glad for Kentucky that he is in office. It was heartbreaking when we lost the KY primary and McConnel retained his seat....
Why did we lose? Well, there were multiple reasons. One was that Trump made last minute donations to Mitch.....
So, you might not like how things are run, but you need to remember that Trump is part of the reason that they are run this way. He helped, by a great deal, keep Mitch McConnel in his seat, so he carries some of the blame for these rules.
