Call it PC all you want, but any candidate who wants to punish the mother will not win any political contest in America. The people on this site used to be politically savy, but not anymore.
The fact is there are some issues so settled that one can't wade in the issue without drowning. Punishing the mother is a political nuclear button promising to bring the drama queen down.
It is completely unnecessary, too, because there is not a thing Trump can do about abortion. Even if the SC overturns Roe v Wade and sends it back to the states, there is still nothing Trump can do about it, so why invite unnecessary controversy when there are other things he can influence and accomplish.
Trump is already loathed by most women. My sister who is 60, has never voted for a democrat all her life, is prepared to vote against him in November because she doesn't want him near the White House. The worship and adulation of Trump is not universal and there are many tens of millions of voters he needs to convince if he wants to be president. I work at a large company in a liberal area and I know not one female who will vote for him and this includes persuadables...people who do vote republican from time to time. Because of this, Trump needs to say that "Roe v Wade is the law of the land" and move on. Matthews set a trap for him on this question. Matthews knew what he was doing and Trump walked right into it.
