Donald Trump Hires Paul Manafort to Lead Delegate Effort
The New York Times' First Draft ^ | March 28, 2016 | Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman

Donald J. Trump, girding for a long battle over presidential delegates and a potential floor fight at the Cleveland convention, has enlisted the veteran Republican strategist Paul J. Manafort to lead his delegate-corralling efforts, according to people briefed on Mr. Trump’s plans.

Mr. Trump confirmed the hire in a brief telephone interview. “Yes,” he said, “it is true.”

Mr. Manafort, 66, is among the few political hands in either party with direct experience managing nomination fights: As a young Republican operative, he helped manage the 1976 convention floor for Gerald Ford in his showdown with Ronald Reagan, the last time Republicans entered a convention with no candidate having clinched the nomination.

He performed a similar function for Mr. Reagan in 1980, and played leading roles in the 1988 and 1996 conventions, for George H. W. Bush and Bob Dole.

Mr. Manafort has drawn attention in recent years chiefly for his work as an international political consultant, most notably as a senior adviser to former President Viktor F. Yanukovych of Ukraine, who was driven from power in 2014.

The hire is a sign that Mr. Trump is intensifying his focus on delegate wrangling as his opponents mount a tenacious effort to deny him the 1,237 delegates he would need to secure the Republican nomination. Under those circumstances, Mr. Trump’s opponents hope they can wrest that prize away from him in a contested convention....

So he hires a guy who helped an Establishment guy win the nomination, who ultimately lost to Jimmy Carter.

Ronald Reagan in 1980. But to learn that you had to read more than one sentence.

You expect them to read the article?

They never do. I'm sure Dick Durbin in post #2 gleefully hit F5, which shoots out a pre-typed talking point.

You didn’t read very far.

Now now, you can't expect them to read more than a few words of the article! Heck, most can't get past the headline or click the link to the full story...

For the Cruz supporters who lack reading comprehension skills.

“He performed a similar function for Mr. Reagan in 1980”

This would be called closing the barn door after the horse just crapped in your living room. Most of the delegate selection in around the country has already begun. In Iowa you had to have already signed up two weeks ago to go to the state convention. In most states this process has already begun.

When the state convention starts I expect at least 1400 of the delegates will be sympathetic to Cruz. Case in point, in SC, AZ, GA, CO, TX and of course LA these are going to be mostly Cruz supporters no matter who they vote for on the first round.

1980 wasn’t a contested convention, was it?

Don't expect anyone to actually think about your article very much... it might require them to consider that they might have been had. And people will go to great lengths to avoid recognizing their own errors.

I said this a month ago. Look at history. Bill Clinton never won a majority of the vote. But he was president twice, because a third party candidate helped to siphon enough Republican votes away for him to win. Someone went to Ross Perot (who I believe was genuine) and said, "You should run, DC is dysfunctional and you're just the man to fix it." So Perot runs and does nothing but elect Clinton.

Now his wife is running. Someone goes to Trump and says, "You should run, show that you could have been president. It'll be great for your brand!"

But whoever whispered in Trumps ear (and I can guarantee you that the chain leads back to a Clinton) misread the public, who were ready for an outsider. So rather than coming in second, declaring he had been robbed by the GOP, and running a third-party campaign to siphon votes and propel Hillary to the White House, Trump actually has the lead. And his ego won't let him fold. So both the GOP and the DNC have been hoist on their own petard.

Now, when the first vote doesn't go to Trump in the convention, the GOPe will put forth a compromise candidate. Trump will run third party. Hillary will win, just like was originally planned...

No I think Sleazy Donald has the best chance of winning. I mean only 70% of women hate him, with a mere 53% saying they would never vote for him. I mean how couldn't Sleazy Donald win, he is only 15 points behind Hillary in current match ups?

This is going to come as a shock, but the strong feelings you have for Trump? That tingling you get up your leg when Sleazy Donald insults another person? You know what I am talking about. Admit it. Well for every one of you, there are two that feel the EXACT opposite. And I am only talking about Republicans.

Good move. The GOPe is determined to screw Trump out of the nomination.
