I was expecting this, just waiting for him to announce it. No surprise at all.

Nathan Deal is a Pinhead, and Still a Democrat... Of course most of the GOP in Georgia are Democrats in different cloth...

He said state legislators should leave freedom of religion and freedom of speech to the U.S. Constitution.

Amen, bro!

Say, Nathan, since you brung it up, have you ever actually read The Constitution?

If so, what do you think The Framers had in mind when they said one's right to freedom of religion and speech shall not be infringed?

“doesn’t reflect the character of our state or the character of its people,”

So, he’s saying “Georgia doesn’t value religious liberty”?

GOPe RINOs just can’t understand why there’s an insurrection of which they are the target.

Deal is the quintessential RINO, was a Democrat congressman until about 1994. Now he’s in the pocket of the Chamber of Commerce.

Unsurprised. Deal is awful. He’s backing gun rights for now, so I will grant him that, but soon enough he will break on that too.... as soon as his masters in DC tell him to.

Sticks wet finger up to see which way the wind is blowing, then makes a courageous, Profile in Courage, decision based on his core beliefs.
This man is destined for Washington. Probably as a Senator.

And the GOP-e wonders why so many hate them.

Someone need to dig to destroy Deal, similar to what happened to Alabama’s Governor who single-handedly took down the Confederate Memorial.

Nikki Haley should be next as well...

He started his political life as a democrat and never really changed except to get elected once the GOP turned Georgia. He’s a vindictive, arrogant a$$hole and Georgia will be glad to see him go in less than 3 years.

The measure “doesn’t reflect the character of our state or the character of its people”
________________________________________

It was written and passed by the people’s representatives.

The governor is imposing his will in defiance of his people’s wishes.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”

This was passed at a time when some of the original 13 colonies (states) had established religion. Each state is free to re-establish religion. After all, “Congress shall make no law ...”. So according to the US Constitution, Georgia can legally establish the Baptist religion as the religion of the state of Georgia. Georgia could apply state funds to Baptist churches and schools.

I believe such practices were common at the founding of our country. I recall reading Benjamin Franklin commenting that New York, by way of exception, showed that religion could prosper without State funding.

The measure “doesn’t reflect the character of our state or the character of its people,”

And by "our state" the governor means Atlanta, without which Georgia would be Alabama.
