Cruz will probably be finished, but not why you think. Rumor and innuendo have ruined many. I don’t believe either until there is proof. I’m funny that way. I was disgusted with how Carson was besmirched.
No Cruz can’t get the required delegates. He may be playing the “take it to the convention game”. But I’m not sure that Trump can gather those delegates either. Do you think we are being played by the GOPe?

While I don’t know about the “payoff” of half a mil to Carl’s Pac, it would be nice to know why the Cruz Campaign decided to shift $500K to an opponent so early in the race (last summer) The reason given by the Cruz campaign at the time doesn’t hold water (some donors like Carly). They could donate to Carly themselves.
