Good question. After following politics for many years it appears there is an unwritten rule that campaigns do not release damaging information themselves—but use a third party outlet- even though it is out in the open that the campaign has opp research staff and funds.
My guess is that it gives the impression of protecting the integrity of the system where the candidate is more concerned with winning over the public with their personality and views rather than the personal endeavors of the opponent.
