The goal is not to throw the election to Hillary, but to make sure that no one gets a majority of the electoral college. If that happens, the Presidency gets decided by the House of Representatives, with each state getting one vote.
This gives the Republicans a huge advantage. Right now more than 60% of the states have a Republican majority in Congress. It is extremely unlikely that the Democrats would end up controlling a majority of state Congressional representations. So Hillary would not get elected.
The trick is to choose a candidate who will win several states, enough to deny anybody a majority of the Electoral College.
