I was speaking of Chile. I thought the idiot was down there apologizing too. And there were some classic generals, dedicated to a constitution down there who were murdered.
The bottom line is that down there, people on the street rarely associate the USA with freedom. That’s kind of sad.
But make no mistake. Though I think the CIA was a disgrace in the way it acted, (under George Bush) it was dead wrong for Obama to do what he did.
The biggest disgrace was how we abandoned our Cold War allies after the USSR collapsed. The governments and generals were tossed to the lions when we no longer needed them to contain communism (which they did fairly effectively for us, so we didn’t have to fight a Vietnam-type war in Latin America). When General Pinochet died, Margaret Thatcher had the guts to praise him; we never acknowledged his aid to us.
Any foreign government that makes a deal with us is very foolish if they don’t realize how quickly we’ll turn our back on them when our administration changes.
