Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)is being accused of lifting a line from 1995s The American President while defending his wife Heidi following a Twitter bout with frontrunner Donald Trump.
Responding to Trumps warning to Cruz to be careful after an anti-Trump super PAC used a photo of Trumps wife Malania posing nude for GQ in 2000 in an ad in Utah, the Texas Senator initially responded by calling Trump a coward.
Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: Lyin Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!
Cruz later responded: Pic of your wife not from us. Donald, if you try to attack Heidi, youre more of a coward than I thought. #classless.
Cruz then told CNN Wednesday morning, If Donald wants to get into a character fight, hes better off sticking with me, because Heidi is way out of his league.
The New York Daily News is accusing Cruz of borrowing the line from the Michael Douglas film The American President without giving it attribution.
In the film, Douglas, who plays American President Andrew Shepherd, warns Sen. Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss) to leave Annette Benings character, Sydney Ellen Wade, out of a political dispute.
You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league, Douglas says in the film.

Now I get it.....and of course I agree.
‘they’ are desperate to make something stick
What ‘they’ don’t understand is everyone has a ‘past’......everyone is broken at some level....
...and We The People get it.....,we can see Trump is sincere and is choosing excellent & credentialed people to advise and support him
Folks will overlook a brash Donald of the past.....or a photo shoot of Melania in her modeling days....
We see present day Melania as a cultured, well spoken woman with a delightful accent and a keen desire to stay home with her child and out of the limelight
We see Trump working his heart out for us while taking flak 24/7
And we count ourselves blessed
The ad was made to shame her. Enquirer is coming out with an expose on possible multiple mistresses of Cruz’s. It’s going to be a bumpy ride folks.
A Trump presidency will finish the job Obie started.
OOOOHHHHHHHH hoh hoh ... OK. But I'm not questioning it, I'm saying flat out his IQ is no higher than 129, and I'll bet he's relatively weak at math.
Cruz is a memorizer bunny. He can't mix and create.
Look, Cruz is a good man, or was ... and he's not stupid. But I triple guarantee you he's not super smart. If he were he wouldn't deliver only lines that are MEMORIZED or borrowed or handed to him by his speech team, which now consists of ... well ... Bush's team.
No one as consistently vile as you are leads a joyful life. I suggest you seek psychiatric help as you are a very sick person.
Hahaha!!!
Not my fault Trump is a serial adulterer and you have an unnatural crush on a reality TV star.
“We see Trump working his heart out for us while taking flak 24/7
And we count ourselves blessed”
Exactly right. Well said.
I reiterate, you are a very sick person who needs help. A shrink will have a field day with you. Seek help soon before it is too late for you.
Nonsense. It’s not theft, it’s called alluding (which requires no attribution), or more likely either a coincidence or a subconscious use of a catchphrase when one doesn’t either remember - or for that matter care about - the source.
Do people give Reagan attribution when they say “There you go again”?
Remember Bentson’s barb to Quayle “I knew Jack Kennedy ... you’re no Jack Kennedy”. That whole narrative, word for word, was used by Reagan (who made also made it a joke about his age since the subject of the comparison, in his case, was Thomas Jefferson). But attribution isn’t needed when you can assume that anyone familiar with the past use of a similar narrative will understand you are making fair use of that for your own purposes.
Imagine how ridiculous it would sound if someone concluded their remarks saying “That’s all folks ... oh, and by the way, I’m quoting Porky Pig”.
This is not a college thesis we’re talking about here, so any rhetorical devices that were once used in the media deserve no attribution. Besides, it’s quite likely that the use of this phrase goes back even further.
Just pointed out the obvious about Trump’s inability to honor his wedding vows. Heck, he bragged about it in the book he claims to have written.
Sorry that hurts your little snowflake feelings.
Stop the presses- Cruz also used toilet paper in a public restroom- obvious blatant theft of product! What a slimeball!
People are getting pretty damned desperate if this movie quote nonsense is what passes for ‘news’ these days-
Your a pretty crude dude .. that is if you are a dude
“Senator, you’re no Ronald Reagan.”
[[Nonsense. Its not theft, its called alluding (which requires no attribution)

Shhhhhh- people are allergic to facts around here- don’t interrupt the ragefest-
No one can post all the bile that you do without being a tad, how shall I put it, off. You need a psychiatric mental intervention. You really aren’t stable, you know.
“Do you normally refute things that you had nothing to do with?”
It was done on his behalf and he knows it. A decent person would disavow it and say how bad it was.
Not stable? I’m not the one with a crush on a reality TV star.
Pointing out the obvious. You have a crush on Donny Boy too?
See post #29.
That ad was completely inappropriate and we had nothing to do with it, Cruz told The Daily Beast. It wasnt our campaign. It wasnt even a super PAC affiliated with us in anyway. It was a totally separate group. I dont know the person who did itwe have no involvement with them whatsoever.
