Here's Politico's fairly even-handed treatment of Sanders over-reach and nearly bankrupting the college. In short, she borrowed money to purchase 30+ acres along Lake Champlain from the Catholic Diocese, hoping for expansion by attracting foreign and out-of-state students who pay higher tuition than in-state, also alumnae grants.

The students it did attract ouldn't pay enough tuition to repay the loan, and the college was near bankrupt. Jane left with a 200K severance package. The woman who replaced her struggled with the problems, and the student union drove her to resign. The college ended up selling all but about 6 acres of the lakeside land.

Politico - What happened at Sanders U.

Politico sounds more pro-Hillary, but probably got the essential facts of the Sanders' part of it correct. It's a long article which is why I tried to summarize it.

The problem was in how she borrowed the money

On the loan applications she way “ overstated” ( to put it charitably) the pledges the college expected to receive to have the ability to make the loan payments

I know I read that it basically consisted of making fraudulent statements on a loan application.

But then, to good socialists, the bank has lots of money and should be willing to,give it to them if they think they have a good cause

The same article said if she wasn't a senators wife she could have been prosecuted

Maybe I can dig it up or anyone can go do some more research
As I read the outcome was to devastate the finances of Burlington college
