Why hasn’t he gotten into mfg since the first time he talked about becoming president almost 30 years ago? (1988 on oprah) What effect did his businesses have on Atlantic City and other towns where his endeavors were the mainstay?

Yes, I believe Trump's businesses have made a positive impact: New York real estate, Chicago skyscraper, DC historic post office turned luxury hotel opening soon, golf courses, just to name a few. Not everyone has to be in manufacturing. Atlantic City's failure is complex, not the sole fault of Trump. Not all businesses succeed.

Interesting to look back. Do you remember when VP Dick Cheney laughed at himself and Don Rumsfeld for their work on wage and price controls in the Nixon White House? Circumstances change. People change. The tax plan that Trump has laid out on his website does not reflect his views in that hearing.
