Optics are everything in modern politics, and Cruz knows that, so the Bush thing was a complete screw up. And once you make it, you can’t do anything or it draws more attention to it.
Until Iowa, Cruz was running a really sharp campaign. He’s had plenty of errors since then. So has Trump, but Trump is able to roll the punches so far. He’s just better at handling optics.
