From what I can see on the electoral map, Senator Cruz has a chance to win primaries in New Mexico, Arizona, and both Dakotas. After that, it looks like either Mr. Trump or Governor Kasich for the states that have not voted yet.

So in that regard Kasich could be setting himself up as the popular choice for VP, whether Trump wants him or not. Especially if Kasich wins a few more states.

Because big picture, I don't see the "Anybody but Trump" crowd going to Cruz, or vice versa. Their natural destination is Kasich. So John the Mailman's Son doesn't have to stay in to win the nomination, just be close enough to be noticeable. If you are going to make a deal to allow Donald Trump to be the Republican candidate, who do you want as VP? Kasich or Cruz? Should be an easy decision for the Establishment/RINO's/etc.

“I don’t see the “Anybody but Trump” crowd going to Cruz, or vice versa.”

The “Anybody but Trump” crowd is simply the GOPe. I don’t believe there is such a crowd in the electorate.
