But it would help if people understood that reciprocal tariffs are like each trading partner shooting themselves in the foot. Tariffs do more harm than good to the country imposing the tariff. Again a tariff is a tax and raises the price of goods to the consumer so the consumer loses, their quality of life is lowered, and the economy as a whole is harmed.
Yes I agree tariffs are undesirable but might we use them as a bargaining tool to open markets for our goods? We are the biggest consumer market in the world. Other countries need access to our market more than we need access to their market. Obviously, we have survived this long without it. We should say to other countries, lift your tariffs on our goods or we will slap a tariff on your goods or issue a blockade. We could at least reach a compromise where we can get tariffs lowered on our goods. I think they will blink first.
