“I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.”

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

3) "Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt. Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead." — Roger Bannister

I hate to be a pedant, but Roger Bannister was a BRIT!

This one still gives me goosebumps...even just copying and pasting!

“General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Ronaldus Magnus.

There should have been a quote from George Washington in there.

If only someone had written down what he said to Charles Lee at Monmouth. That would have been something to hear.

He was said to have had a VERY loud voice.

It’s not an American quote, but, extremely manly in my opinion:
“O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget Thee, do not forget me.” which he followed promptly with the order “March on, boys!” Jacob Astley, 1st Baron Astley of Reading at the battle of Edge Hill.

Roger Bannister was most decidedly English, and a physician, himself.
