In America they are commonly referred to as snowmobiles.

When I was growing up in CT they were called snowmobiles as well. My educated guess is that we didn't use the term "snow machine" because that's what they called the thing that made snow for the ski resorts. I susppose when you go to Alaska or northern Canada that there is no need for the other kind of snow machine.
