Real estate magnate Trump was answering a question from the moderator in the March 10 debate in Miami, with respect to the suppression of Chinese university students. They were only pleading for freedom but were by way of armed force crushed by the Chinese Communist Party in Tienanmen Square in June 1989, resulting in many deaths, the “Tienanmen Massacre.”
In that reply, Trump said that he “did not support the government’s action” but stated that “a strong government was able to put down the ‘riot’ (sic) with strength. That shows you the power of strength.”
Because Trump in his response termed the uprising of the students in requesting democratization in China as a "riot", a Chinese dissident who lives in exile in the USA has issued a protest on Saturday.
“For many Chinese, it is simply an unacceptable statement by Trump. It is an insult to those who stood up to oppose the Communist Party of China but were crushed, dissident and democracy leader Dr. Wei Jingsheng （魏京生） stated. He called on Mr. Trump to apologize for it.
In addition, another former Tienanmen student survivor and Chinese dissident exiled in the USA Dr. Yang Jianli（楊建利） (and others) also have come forward and issued a statement demanding an apology from Donald Trump. “His statement takes a lot of nerve. The attitude towards (the use of) power held to by Trump is a contradiction of the values of the United States. This is totally unbefitting and unbecoming of an American president,” his statement read, as voices increasingly demanded Mr. Trump’s apology over his statement.” END OF TRANSLATION
Like I wrote: Tiananmen Square was a fight between two communist factions.
You are talking about semantics, they were in fact rioting...you want to use a different word...go ahead...but to deny they were rioting is just a lie. You completely ignore the parts of what Trump said that were clear to anyone...like when he called the reaction by the government “vicious”...what is your purpose in ignoring that? And then you try to distort further his use of the word strong and strength...pretending it meant something pro government. That is a callous deception...and no one with honor would say such things. You accusing me of anything means nothing...you simply have no credibility DB...that is what happens when people lie and distort...they lose their credibility except with others of their ilk.

Larry Pressler in commemorating the observance of the 100th-day of mourning for the victims of the June 4 Tienanmen Square massacre. Statements by Pressler (R-S.D.) and Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) were issued for publication in the Congressional Record as Chinese across the world observed the traditional 100th day of mourning for the pro-democracy demonstrators who fell before the guns and tanks of the Communist People's Liberation Army. Helms praised the mainland victims "who died in the cause of freedom 100 days ago and those who suffer today. Their cause is just. Their cause will triumph. We will not forget." Sen. Pressler said the young men and women who died at Tienanmen Square "were risking their lives for their country." He said: "In time, the cause of liberty and justice will triumph in (mainland) China. The people of (mainland) China will overcome the machine guns, the tanks, the secret police, and all other forms and symbols of repression and tyranny. Until then, it will be a struggle to which we must give our moral support."

Listen, AmericanInTokyo, you are too close to it to understand that you are very upset with nothing Trump actually did, but your misperception of what he said. There is no sense in talking about it...
Words have meaning. They were not rioting. The only point I made.
Funny how you have to keep explaining what Trump said so we know the “true” meaning of his words.
You can’t even acknowledge a screw up when he makes one.
The lies and distortions are all yours to keep your illusion going.
What is truly strange and embarrassing for you is you have to keep distorting to try to demonize Trump...drop it, you are making an ass out of yourself. Trump had nothing to do with this event other that to relay that it was horrible.

We simply disagree, you seem to want to blame Trump for something I do not believe he intended. I think you are targeting a non target. I would not bring in a moderator over that.
It does not surprise me that Time and soon other media outlets carry this non story and use it to squash Trump from speaking. That is what is happening right now. Trumps very life is at risk because there are zealots out there who will stop at nothing to shut down his voice...hmm, there is a little irony for you there.
Sparest thou, the drama. Where have you been for 16 years while I have snagged Asian-based articles, translating them and said providing commentary to Free Republic??
That's true, but Trump seems to have a sweet spot for strong government action. He admires it, even when tries to draw a line and say that he doesn't support it.
Anyway, it doesn't bode well. I cannot imagine Trump giving Reagan's "Evil Empire" speech.
