Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said on Sunday that the protesters at rival Donald Trump's rallies are behaving "abusively and wrong," but added that it doesn't help when the GOP front-runner encourages violence.
"At the end of the day in any campaign, responsibility starts at the top," the Texas senator said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.
"And it is not beneficial when you have a presidential candidate like Donald Trump telling his supporters, 'Punch that guy in the face.' We ought to have a president who brings us together, who doesn't seek to divide us."
Cruz said on Sunday that the protesters at Trump's rallies don't have a right to "threaten violence."
He added that it's important a candidate show respect for the voters.

He should take his own advice and stick to his principles rather than selling out to the Bushes and the GOPe.
Looks like the GOPe did get one thing right: CRUZ IS RADIOACTIVE
One can only assume, at this point, that Cruz cozying up to Trump early on was JUST AN ACT and that Cruz fully expected Trump to implode.
Trump refuses to implode, so now we’re starting to get a look at THE REAL TED CRUZ...and like the GOPe has been saying, it is not pretty.
How does that explain the Bernie supporters?
Cruz is on the wrong side of history here.
Leftist agitators could be targeting him - if he were the front runner - and he would blame who then? Himself?
These are anti-democracy leftist thugs out to shut up people who want to save America.
Cruz needs to shut the hell up or, better, side with Republicans against the communist insurgents terrorizing Mr. Trump.
That idiot, Chuck Todd, asked Trump this morning if he would take responsibility for the violence at his rally site...
Trump, of course, said he would not...
What Trump should’ve done is ask Todd if he’d take responsibility for any violent acts that are coming at Trump’s rallies..
Todd and the media keep playing it up over and over and giving the agitators more and more air time...This prompts them to continue and even get worse...
“At the end of the day in any campaign, responsibility starts at the top,”
If you wear a short skirt, you deserve to be Raped.
If we weren’t Americans Al Queda would not have flown those planes into those buildings.
I see NO DIFFERENCE in the Three Statements!!
That’s right, Ted. When you step in the doo, back off and step in it again.
ThoughTrump said FELT like punching in face. Not a directive to do so.
Someone here earlier noted that Cruz was born after the 60s and thus never got to see, first-hand, what the left was doing back then.
Trump is old enough. Maybe age is MORE IMPORTANT than we sometimes think.
He must have gotten marching orders from his globalist masters.
So, when Glenn Beck calls Trump a “racist”, “Nazi”, “Hitler” and his supporters “brownshirts” that’s Cruz’s responsibility. Good to know.
This primary season is a stress test for all the candidates.
Carson seems to have kept the coolest among all of them.
Cruz might have a point that Trump has sometimes acted less than conciliatory when he could well have afforded to be conciliatory, but this is over the top. This is giving excuses to the protesters who are coming from irreconcilable leftist positions.
Cruz, there is a time to put your foot down. Even if your audience throws a giant fit and tantrum.
They say desperate people do (and say) desperate things.
Responsibility is not submission to thugs.
I want a fighter.
Cruz blew it badly by going after cheap political points.
Ted Cruz HAS the charm of Barry Goldwater, the ethics of Richard Nixon and the backbone of Mitt Romney.
Donald Trump is Americas last hope. GO TRUMP!
Can it be possible that these “Bernie Supporters” are NOT Bernie supporters but Hillary’s with the help of George Soros? {Kill 2 birds with 1 Stone}
Except his campaign where he denies knowledge of the dirty tricks and lies.
Step in it with more panache!
