Lefties love state-run mass transit (trains, buses), because it allows them to control movement and access. The plan always has been to force people into cities where they won’t “need” personal transportation, which they will outlaw, citing environmental and safety concerns.
And I think these “high speed rail” boondoggles enable the politicians to waste all the transportation money so they don’t have to spend it building more roads for evil cars and trucks.
Can't rule that out. There are also transportation geeks who obsess over efficiency and freight trains do use less fuel than trucks. But that assumes you have track going where you need the freight to go. The problem of what do do when the tracks end isn't part of their efficiency calculations.
Self driving trucks (and cars) provide a practical solution that enables the lefties to control movement. The push for that is just getting started.
