When we were living in Japan in the mid 1990s, my family and I used frequent flier miles to take a week's vacation on Guam. Rather than stay in the Tumon Bay area with the large tourist hotels, we rented a place for the week with a small kitchen, shopped where the natives shopped and did what the natives did.

I must say that the natives are a lot more friendly than those in Hawaii, who only seem interested in getting as much of your money as possible by doing as little as possible. Even the maid assigned to our room was extra sweet, so much so that she ended up inviting us to church and we even ended up attending the service with her.

A lot of the beaches were closed that week due to an infestation of jelly fish. The locals were very nice about directing us to either the few beaches which were open and safe or the public pools, which were well maintained.

In 1974 I became friends with nun from Guam. I’d get he goat by calling her fellow citizens Guamaniacs. She said she’d send me to Hell.
