The story is that it was a rented mob, paid for by the likes of George Soros, made to look like some sort of grassroots uprising. It was not.
A close relative of mine was stationed in Germany during the cold war. Every day, a bus would come over from East Germany to the Western side. 'Protestors' would be handed a sign; they would march around and denounce the US.
These 'protests' did not get regular coverage until Reagan was in office, and then were treated in the US media as if they were the arbiters of Good in the world.
In fact, they would sit on the curb to eat their box lunch, protest a bit more, then board the busses and go home.
The whole thing was orchestrated and the media over there knew it.
