But you have to understand that when someone like Cruz says something dumb like this, it's just like saying that Trump caused the problem. Cruz should lay aside his petty differences with Trump and condemn the protesters. Even Rubio did a better job, although by no means perfect.
I've disliked Marco Rubio since the Gang of Eight attempt, but you are correct. Last night was possibly Ted Cruz' worst "own goal" of this game, and the tragedy is that he could have so easily done the right thing for everyone (himself included).

Cruz didn’t say Trump was responsible for the violence. He said Trump was responsible for creating a negative atmosphere.”
Kind of like: “I’m not saying that she’s responsible for having just been raped, I’m saying that her short dress created an atmosphere that drove others to rape her.”
Even stupider is the Cruzers trying to defend it. Its like blaming the rape victim for the way she dressed and not the rapist.
