Hadn't thought of that, but certainly could be part of it. From conversations I've had with a fairly diverse group of people (including voters for both parties) it seems to me that a significant percentage of the population wants to dismantle the political establishment, entirely, including all the peripheral apparatchiks, and the media who derive their stature from rubbing elbows with these politicians. Seriously. I think it goes that deep. They see this collection of people, on both sides of the aisle, as marginally talented but deeply egotistical and feel that their lives and personal freedoms are being harmed at many levels by a political oligarchy that exists only for its own perpetuation.
They essentially want to disempower and delegitimize all politicians, and return to a system in which politicians are public servants without celebrity status, and the media reports the news and are also not celebrities. There is a lot of anger.
This includes Sanders voters/supporters, who essentially see Hillary as part of this self-interested establishment.
What I’m seeing here in NJ (a fairly liberal state in all things but race) is a large number of Dems completely disillusioned with their party and their token president; except for those on the government teat (welfare or workfare), the working people are exhausted and broke.
I’m not an optimist, but politicians on both sides seem to think the Republicans are poised to do well. The gag order on criticizing the Kenyan Pirate doesn’t hold in the voting booth, and I think many voters have a message for him...
