What would prevent it? In Illinois gun owners are licensed so if you weren't, it would be a crime to hold the gun. What prevents it in CO?

CO requires all private transfers to go through an FFL for a background check.

Oh, that's cool. So Colorado registers your gun for you -- you don't have to register it, they make a list of your latitude, longitude (to four figures), your elevation, your income level, your political party, and what guns you own, without your ever having to set pencil to paper. How convenient! </s>
