Windows Ten started downloading automatically. I simply unplugged the computer and restarted in safe mode.
How do I get rid of this bastard system update. Specifically purchased new Windows 7 Pro machine and do not want to update EVER!
How do I shut off this auto update. Not computer savvy BTW
DOS 6.2 was pretty darn solid ;^)

I've used Windows 7 for four years.
The updates always come through the first week of each month. Mine came today.
I get screen messages every day urging me to download Windows 10.
Just delete the messages.
Windows 10 does not download itself or download automatically.
Warning - many Windows 7 people are complaining that March's update - the most recent one - has screwed up their computer when starting and loading software.
Today's upload gave me the “Black Screen of Death” for about one hour. Finally, a message popped up, it said to click the message box to re-start, I clicked the box, everything re-booted, and now it works perfectly.
You block the install by closing the window. Also, you have 30 days after the install to go back to Windows 7. That is what I did. Windows 10 erased my home page, removed my cd drive from registry erased my tool bar and a host of other issues. It has a lot of features which I don’t need or want. I am not an on line gamer.
Good luck!
XP users are literally the butt of so many jokes in IT support. You all understand that XP hasn’t been supported by Microsoft for almost 2 years now, and there are no fewer than 15 in-the-wild, exploitable vulnerabilities in the XP kernel that will never be patched? I’ve personally hacked an XP machine (white hat) to produce a vulnerability report to a client. There are 14 year old kids in Russia, China, and Africa who can steal your personal information with little more than an IP address and a half an hour of their time.
Please, for your safety and privacy, consider upgrading to something else. I normally advocate for Microsoft, but if you’re not upgrading because you don’t want anything like Windows 7, 8, or 10, please consider an Apple computer or try a free distribution of Linux. There’s absolutely NOTHING to gain by stubbornly staying on XP. It’s only a matter of time before your personal information is stolen from you. It WILL happen.
It only downloads the upgrade files. Google/Bing “remove Windows 10 automatic update” and follow any of the number of write ups on how to turn off the auto-update. Microsoft has a multitude of official write-ups on how to disable the upgrade.

I did it on three PCs and no problems.
Compared to the 8s I love 10.
Anti-Beacon is small, simple to use, and is provided free of charge. It was created to address the privacy concerns of users of Windows 10 who do not wish to have information about their PC usage sent to Microsoft. Simply clicking Immunize on the main screen of Anti-Beacon will immediately disable any known tracking features included by Microsoft in the operating system.
Embrace change. Windows 10 is great.
After one day of use, I agree.
Some FReeper recommended GWX control panel. That’s been working well for me so far. Plus, it gives you a status confirming that your settings are correct to protect you from WX, that the files aren’t being stored on your HDD, etc.
Also Bookmarking for future use.
You can disable the Windows Update service and run Windows like a sane person.
If you want to update, turn it back on again.
