You understand that The New York Times just destroyed what is called "reporter's privilege" (also journalist's privilege, newsman's privilege, or press privilege).
"Reporter's privilege" is a "reporter's protection under constitutional or statutory law, from being compelled to testify about confidential information or sources." It may be described in the US as the qualified (limited) First Amendment or statutory right many jurisdictions have given to journalists in protecting their confidential sources from discovery.
In their zeal to "get" Trump, the NY Times spilled the beans on confidential information that they had.
No reporter in this country will be able to stand in front of a judge and claim "confidentiality" after this.
