A better analogy is when insurgents attack and a group of people are thinking...wow, what happened? What did WE do to set off the insurgents? Except in this case, the GOPe sent many so-called conservatives to Congress, then they folded and/or incumbant Republicans did not support them. The people revolted and attacked the GOPe via TEA Party and the Trump Tidalwave. But, the GOPe refuse to answer the issue of “Hey, what did we do to trigger this?”. Trump is a symptom, not the illness.

BY elitist snob, I presume you mean crony capitalist sell-out incompetent holds a position of power or influence because they have learned to go along to get along and never done anything useful in their lives not even changed a flat tire, or, horrors, replaced a length of cracked pipe after a bad freeze.
And the resurgent grass roots needs to understand that the Elites are cornered and will fight back just like cornered animals. The Elites are at risk of losing everything that they value: their power; their sources of income (aka bribes) and their cushy lifestyle. This will not be a walk in the park.

I agree. While getting rid of some vagrant raccoons might be a good outcome, having a house full of skunks as the ultimate result may not be to most people’s liking.
The harder they try to force us to accept what we're selling, the more we don't want it.
