That’s why Trump has pledged to repeal and replace Obamacare.

It is the replace I have problems with.

The government has no constitutional authority to be in the healthcare business.

Repeal only.

Like it or not, we’re not going to return to status quo ante, which is gone.

We need to reform our health care system so it works with minimal government interference.

The government should make sure market players follow the rules, people know the plan they choose will provide the level of protection they need and that consumers don’t face fraud.

I think that’s as reasonable as it goes. The government should not be in the business of micromanaging health care or trying to run one-seventh of our economy.

Repeal only.

That is NOT politically possible, and not even practical in several respects.

What people forget is that health insurance costs were becoming exceedingly problematic for many people and businesses, even before ObamaCare. There was no way I could afford a private plan for myself and my family, so I stuck with the plan the company I worked for offered. But, the company I worked for was, after 1995 or so, forced to constantly jump from one insurer to another, to try each year or 2 to get the best offer. After a year or 2 with any given insurer, then the rates to our company would jump, and off they'd be trying to find the next (temporarily) lowball offer, all while the plan benefits gradually got worse, and employee contributions went up... By 2006, the company seriously considered dropping employee insurance entirely, but in 2008 everyone was laid off anyway because "China", regulations, etc., had killed us.

The government has no constitutional authority to be in the healthcare business.

Now, it is true that a lot of this problem was caused by gov't interference in the first place. But people are going to have to be shown real results that backing out properly can improve their situation. I see no way that it can be done all at once, or even 100% in 10 years. What DO you (you!) do for the 10-20% who cannot afford health care? What about those with pre-existing conditions, esp. if they change jobs?

The problem wih “repeal only” is that it puts the goverment squarelly back into the middle of healthcare again, which is what caused the current propblem.

The system before Obamacare still has government tentacles into so many areas that it created the mess Obamacare was suposed to fix.

You are saying “go back to that mess”.

Trump is saying, get most of government out of the system, and let the States be laboratories for what works.

I do not think we can get much better, as a practical matter.

The enormouse advantage of this plan is that it goes away from one size fits all detailed management of health care by the federal government.

No they don’t. But this does repeal it. This also just redefines the rules on how it is sold. It’s now national, open to all companies across state lines (which does fall under the commerce clause), and there is no individual mandate.
