When the novel Dune opens, humanity has been ruled for over ten thousand years by a triumvirate between the Emperor/Landsradd Coundil, the Spacing Guild, and the Bene Gesserit. All that time humanity is kept controlled by those three parties. All of that power coming mostly from who has power over the melange "spice".
They created the environment from which Muad'Dib would arise. One man becomes capable of toppling everything they have built up and thought they would never lose. None of those three liked the others, indeed there was no loss of enmity between them. But they had to ally with each other so that they could try to destroy Muad'Dib. So they could keep the status quo going.
