Donald Trump says parts of his immigration proposals are negotiable, but only minor details about his border wall.
In an interview with Fox News Sean Hannity on Monday night, Trump responded to a question about a recent claim, first introduced by BuzzFeed earlier in the day, that he told The New York Times editorial board in an off-the-record tape-recorded meeting that he may not follow through with his proposed immigration measures if he is elected president.
The New York Times is claiming today that they had an off-the-record conversation with you in January, Hannity started.
We had a board meeting, it was off-the-record, suddenly they leak it, its all over the place, Trump said.
They said its negotiable on the wall, Hannity said in reference to Trumps stance on Mexican immigration and his oft-stated promise to build a border wall.
By the way it is negotiable. Things are negotiable, Trump said. Ill make the wall 2 feet shorter or something.
Trump was quick to add that the negotiation does not include nixing the idea altogether.
Building it? Not negotiable.
Would it be negotiable about the 11 million? Hannity pressed. Maybe let some people stay if they register in a period of time?
I would say this, Trump answered. We will work out some system thats fair, but we either have a country or we dont. We need a border. We need a wall.

Rely on that "hope and change" thing huh?
Supporters of Hilter really THOUGHT he was right too... I have a honest, deep fear of Donald Trump.
As the only one who has a chance to be different I support him. His willingness to be politically correct is the other reason. So basically tare down the politically correct walls and build a wall on the border makes sense to me. The main problem that everyone had was that no one actually believed anyone would secure the border. Trump shows here that his negotiation skills are real. He could have gotten the “gang of 8 bill” passed if he actually wanted to because he would have yelled about the wall first before even mentioning other things. He’s obviously a smart negotiator. From my perspective though the most important thing is preserving the culture. Keeping 11 million people who don’t fully understand or embrace the culture is a problem. This speaks to the immigration process itself and that needs to be fixed before anyone can come back. I would like to see immigration stopped from countries outside of the western culture until a realistic way of bringing immigrants into the culture is found.
Cool. You're beginning to sound like one of us Trumpkins, Durbin.
"Let The Trump flow through you, Durbin. Feel the power of the Trump side of the Force."
All you have is insults, and with lots of luck 3rd place! Have a Super Tuesday.
Real slow this time so you'll catch it.
He doesn't need to negotiate anything. He needs to enforce the law and build the wall.
So why would he tell Hannity it's negotiable? What's to negotiate? Who negotiates when you have everything you need get something done?
Surely, not the most greatest, yugest, Superest business man in America? REALLY?
Trump Chump!! ... even rhymes.
Thanks for the idea.
I’ll also point out that his starting position is the wall. I trust him more than the others to prevent new illegals from entering more than the others who have been talking about it since 2004
We will work out a system that’s fair?
Oh I see, you want to spin that as “ nah I’ll let illegals stay if they give a cute story”. Is that what you are implying?
Well lets look at the tough as nails consistent principled conservative position (that you guys seem to never want to talk about) position of the most virtuous Ted Cruz.
Defend this:
“I’m not going to round people up. They will self-deport or we will catch them after they commit a crime”
Oh... Well ok.
And why the hell do you you keep saying Drumph?
Is that from that left-wing HBO show?
I’m OK with that.
That was a separate question.
When asked about his statement regarding the good ones being allowed to return, he responded with ‘we’ll work out some system that’s fair’.
Fair is in the eye of the beholder, but you know he won’t allow criminals back, and I would consider welfare frauds to be criminals as well as leeches on the social safety net.
I wouldn’t allow anyone back in who filed taxes as if they were legal only to receive earned income and child credits.
So, fair will be decided once they deport them.
“Cool. You’re beginning to sound like one of us Trumpkins, Durbin.”
Yeah, but good luck getting me to vote for Trump.
He used the F*** word:
>>> We will work out some system thats fair... <<<
How are voters responding to name calling these days? Based on the last 3 landslides for Trump & polls showing he wins 11 of 12 states today doesn’t look like its working at all.
Thanks for all you do that drives Trump’s numbers ever higher & have a very happy Super Tuesday :)
No really:
Reagan in 1986 wanted border security in exchange for amnesty. We got amnesty and no border security.
I hope Trump does the following
1) Builds a wall and increases funding for the border patrol
2) Increase funding for ICE and have them arrest illegals who have criminal records and deport them
3) As for the illegals who have been here working and never broke the law, here is where I think he can negotiate. The U.S. is not going to forcibly deport 11 Million people. However, you don’t give amnesty to them. You have them register with immigration services, pay back taxes and fines (Kasich’s proposal) and then they have to go through the immigration process to become citizens like every other immigrant group that has come to this country, like mine did from Sicily. My mother has a copy of my Grandfathers immigration papers and it took him some 30 years to become a citizen and he was a legal immigrant.
I remember arguing with Trump supporters that there was no way in hell he was going to round up 11 million people and deport them, and they insisted that's exactly what he was going to do.
And some folks would say he's going to give touchback amnesty to illegals, and his supporters would insist that we were ignorant, liars, and didn't know what we were talking about.
Other candidates would call him on it, say it wouldn't/couldn't happen. Then Trump would shoot them down, and his supporters were saying it was going to be a new day coming and all the illegals would be shipped out.
But as it turns out...his critics were right the whole time. He's backpedaled from everything he promised except building a wall, which is something most of the other candidates supported anyway.
Now, all he says is that he's going to be "fair". Heh.
I'd say it was fortuitous that this bait and switch was exposed in time, but his supporters are so invested in what they've built up Trump to be in their own minds that they don't even care that reality is different.
It can certainly be read that way.
However, it is realistic to expect discussion on type, size, technology, location, eminent domain, patrolling, etc.
All of those things have to be decided.
