As sociologists of religion, we are intrigued by the surprisingly large number of self-identified Christians, especially evangelicals, who support Trump and have voted for him over the more vocally religious Ted Cruz. In past elections, such voters were motivated by moral convictions around abortion, same sex-marriage, and the perceived deterioration of traditional values, and voted predictably for candidates such as Huckabee, Santorum, and most consequentially, George W. Bush.

I believe that the ancient term for them was probably “Sadducees and Pharisees.”
Ha. I will crawl over broken glass to vote for Trump.
“Christopher Pieper, Ph.D., is lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Baylor University and the author of Sociology as a Spiritual Practice: How Studying People Can Make You a Better Person. Matt Henderson is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at Baylor University, where he specializes in religion, family, and health.”
Baylor - isn’t that the university that thinks rapists make the best athletes, after having had bad luck with killers?
Not Dallas. Baylor is in Waco, the home of David Korech and the law enforcement massacre of the motorcyclists.
” Mr. Trump has chosen to make immigration and the economy central themes of his campaign and his rhetoric surrounding these issues consistently appeals to fear and anger, absent appeals to love.”
That statement is so helpless, so pathetic, so damnable, so gay, that I don’t know where to start.
Since when were liberals ever concerned with anything but destroying Christianity?
Tis Mazin to me how non-Christians and even anti-Christians are so knowledgeable on what Christians should do and what is “Christian” and how we should vote (Im not sure even Jesus would qualify to these nimrods). To liberals religion is like all other things (misnamed)progressive... theology confused with ideology all for the cause of tyranny and hyper-Nanny government.
While I’m no fan of Trump he is FAR BETTER than Hillary or Bernie. With Trump (or any GOPer) the Democrats will suddenly re-discover the wisdom of the Founders, the genius of the Constitution and value of limited and divided government.(wink/wink)... With Hillary (for sure) or Bernie (probably) we will get even more “weaponized” gangster government. If Trump’s the GOP nominee, we have NO CHOICE but to vote for him. Sad but true. At least he says hell support 2nd Amendment, religious freedom and then there is the “wall”. Hillary/Bernie does NONE of that! God Bless America!
Actually for most people money = God. All elections are about 95 percent about money.
It’s interesting that the lefties and main stream media have found religion all of the sudden.
That pretty much describes the entire article. I see no academics bashing Sanders for some reason...
Christ ostracized for talking with sinners, tax collectors, etc.
Get with the times, man!
Love thy oppressor!
Dear Christopher Pieper and Matt Henderson,
I know ONE REASON why I can be a Christian and VOTE FOR WHOEVER THE **** I WANT:Hugs and kisses,
1) I ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS THE SAVIOR AND AM REDEEMED IN HIS BLOOD.
... you effing miserable Pharisee-like Anti-Christian moronic freaks.
Laz
I got a similar one but it was how Jews shouldn’t vote for Trump.
It’s like they think we’re dumb.
Nonsense.
I said this two months ago - Cyrus and Darius - and even Nebuchadnezzar who God set his arrogant heart right.
