I think Cruz and Rubio are still independent, each clawing for their own self-interest.

No doubt. Both first term senators who have spent most of their adult working life in government. They are very ambitious and neither one has given up the hope of being the nominee. My point is that they have now formed a tag team to take down Trump hoping for a brokered convention. When the dust settles, regardless of who gets the nomination, they will be on the same side preventing Trump from being the nominee.

I think that pretty much reflects the split in the party, the Trump insurgency is minority "within the fort." What is carrying Trump is almost entirely public popularity in defiance to the party. Long overdue, so happy to see it happening.

How much of a minority is open to question. The GOPe fort has high walls and a narrow gate. They want to control all the rest of us serfs outside the walls. Trump's appeal extends beyond the normal GOP voter. He is resonating beyond partisan lines. Trump is threatening to remake the GOP, which is not a bad thing. Trump is not a conservative. He is a populist and nationalist uncontrolled by the political class and their donors. Frightening stuff for many.

I was saying that this "teaming" hasn't happened yet. But maybe, if they agree (not as in meeting to discuss) that each has a better chance to dilute Trump's share of delegates in some states. Rubio being okay with Cruz in to dilute the take in Texas; Cruz being okay with Rubio in to dilute Trump's take in Florida, etc.

Absolutely agree. Cruz said as much already, Rubio is better than Trump. If Cruz drops out first, he will quickly move to endorse Rubio, for whatever that is worth.
