Trump wants to 'open up' libel laws to sue media outlets

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Friday vowed to "open up" libel laws in order to sue media outlets that write "purposely negative" and "horrible" articles about him.

"I’m gonna open up our libel laws, so when they write purposely negative and horrible, false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Trump said at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

"We’re going to open up those libels laws," he added. "So that when The New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when The Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money."

Occam is usually right.

Correct!

And Trump has shown CONCLUSIVELY that he's smarter than 95% of the politicians, the pundits and the chattering classes.

So, Occam's Razor says that Trump is doing another move that you can't comprehend. :)

>> This is just Trump letting his fascist side out for a little air, threatening to use the law <<

Well, at least he hasn’t yet acted like Mussolini, to suggest that his followers “rough up” dissenters and hecklers.

Oh, wait . . . .

“Nice little TV network you’ve got there. It would be a pity if something happened to it.”

Since when does the president have the authority to “open up laws?” Trump doesn’t seem to care about the constitution.

Trump is advocating censoring political speech. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are pillars of the American system.

Trump would be a dangerous president.

I’m trying to find some negative media article or video that contains anything false about Donald Trump.

So much for Trump being a constitutional conservative.
Whos does Trump think he is, Vladamir Putin?

If Trump got his wish, there’d be a whole lot more people suing him than he could possibly imagine.

True, but what has anyone published about Trump that is a lie?

Trump recently had to pay the lead plaintiff in his Trump University scam almost $800,000 for filing an frivolous anti-SLAAP lawsuit. And, BTW, Trump s going to lose his ass in tht class action RICO lawsuit against him. Even better, the plaintiffs will get treble damages and legal fees.

Trump would be a defendant in about 10 times the cases as he would be the plaintiff if Trump had his way on this.

Actually, people have won cases against those publications, but they were private citizens for the purpose of defamation.

As if such power in the hands of Trump wouldn’t be bad enough.

Telling the truth about Trump can never be libel since the truth is an absolute defense.

Actually, you are a bit mistaken. If a private person sues a media outlet for defamation, the burden of proof is much lower. In some states, only negligence needs to be proved if a private perso sues a media organization, as the NYT found out in the Atlantic Olympics bombing incident.

Trump also lost that case because he presented no evidence of his actual worth.
