By the time I walked down the aisle -- or rather, into a judge's chambers -- in 2010, at the age of 35, I had lived 14 independent, early-adult years that my mother had spent married.

Right there is the answer to many of the issues plaguing America today.

She says so much more than she intended in that one sentence.

I have no wish to compel anyone to marry, or not to marry; to have children, or not to have children.

I observe, however, that when a critical mass of people in any society choose to live as this woman does, that society dies.
