Note that this is 33% of the 22% that identified as "independent" in exit polls. All the other candidates got a share of the "independent vote" too. 2% of the people exit polled identified as DEM.

I don’t see any % listed for identification of voters as Democrat in the WaPo story....Dems are listed as a dash...and could not vote unless they changed their party affiliation to with GOP or Independent.
