The two legged snakes are the most dangerous, especially the ones who dwell in high places. You can find them in most any climate.
Fire ants are that bad?
Why?
IMMIC, you can get a permit, pay a fee and take a small hp boat on Quabbin.
* So what is going on on that Island that they don't want occuring?
* Is this an opportunity to create an even bigger problem so Big Guberment (at the State level) can stop it?
* Who Benefits from this? Dept of (insert name) ?
* So ask yourself this, Why do they not want people enjoying Quabbin?
* You know this is a deal breaker for a lot of people, hikers etc that currently enjoy Quabbin might dwindle to Zero.
* Big "Enviro" at work here? Keep everything pristine? No man-involvement at all?
The long-shot, is the venom from these snakes a potential cure for x, y, or z, disease, and the State ( and or certain legislators ) are looking for a way to capitalize on it by having a stock of said snakes...
There is so little habitation around there, this isn’t going to hurt anyone.
I am no fan of rattlesnakes in my back yard, but they are already in the area.
People need to relax.
Well, all of the islands are off limits. They don’t want people camping and crapping in the water supply.
There are a lot of limits on what people can do on the Quabbin. Yeah, you can fish there in teeny tiny boats.
I cannot imagine any department benefitting from this.
I worked with these guys and some Perigrine Falcons in Springfield years back. Their job is wildlife conservation. Duh.
Aren’t there imaginary terrorists out there you guys should be wetting your pants over?
And keep everything pristine?
You realize the Quabbin is man made, right? You realize there are towns under there. And thousands of bombs?
Quabbin is anything but Pristine.
My dad and two uncles went fishing. They spotted a rattlesnake swimming across the lake
My dad took a mighty swat at the snake with the edge of the paddle. on the up swing, the snake caught on the paddle fell down into the boat. Not to worry, my uncle in the stern whipped out his pistol and shot the snake, making holes in the floor of the boat.
My uncle in the front of the boat stood up to see and the rocking boat caused him to fall in the lake.
this is a very short version of a long family tale
“”Aren’t there imaginary terrorists out there you guys should be wetting your pants over?””
Speaking of... remember this?
http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2013/05/late-night_trespassing_at_quab.html
‘Late-night trespassing at Quabbin by foreign students triggers precautionary state-wide terrorism alert; police say no crime or criminal intent detected’
The rattlesnake population was already impacted by flooding the area in 1940 for the reservoir.
There’s ‘Rattlesnake Hill’ in New Salem, MA - it’s still there. Wonder if anyone has done a count on that hill.
And the left accuses repubs of wanting to “poison” the air/water.
Here, the left “wants” to poison you w/snakebites.
MIT grad students who are fans of Stephen King. Just proof that smart people can also be morons.
Snakes on that island is only impact the mouse population. And maybe some birds.
Watch—the snakes will take out the eagle eggs. Then we will have a crisis on our hands.
when the mice are all eaten, the snakes will migrate to hunt for Rats.
Yes I am aware of it’s man made nature. I was thinking out loud as to the how’s and why’s of this. BTW the Spfld Falcons, how cool! They would often hunt South of their nest by the CT River and Forest Park, their distinct leading edge profile would give them away.....
Yes. Fire ants are evil.
Once upon a time endangered species meant just that. But in the 80s it morphed into something else, useful to the government in its relentless war against private property.
If you own a parcel of land on which a particular animal is NOT present or present below its normal habitat average, then the government can deem that animal endangered on your property, even if there are untold numbers on property surrounding yours.
Once that happens you are restricted in what you can and cannot do on your property, up to and including living on it.
In this case, we have a plethora of this snake in surrounding states but limited in that one state. Therefore, it is endangered in that state and federal rules apply.
Eventually one or more will escape and start a colony off the island - that property will then fall under federal guidelines and restrictions.
This will not end until the EPA is totally eliminated. Rebuilding it - no matter how many protections are built in to stop lefty subversion - it will become like or worse than the current EPA.
My mom lives about 3 miles from there.
I see plenty of risk with this idea, and no benefit.
You personally may not have, but given the overwhelming majority of votes for the socialist 0 in NYC in the last election, the vast majority of your fellow citizens would on those extremely rare occasions when their thoughts go west of the Hudson river.
“Endangered “ species don't even have to be in surrounding areas. I live in an area where a certain kind of water snake is supposed to live (it has NEVER been seen here) . Anyone who builds here has to do habitat assessment for that snake.
I don't expect the EPA is in any danger of losing it's power. All democrats love the thing and nearly all republican women are in love with the idea of an endangered environment protected by the government. The only people I see who oppose it are republican men.
I worked for the cable company that put them on the cable tv system. What a hoot. I was doing interviews from Australia and Europe. It was the best show in town for a number of years.
I have some great photos of them from the top of Monarch Place. Pretty birds.
They may be endangered in MA, but here, when we are on the ground together in close proximity, I'm the endangered species!!

Not too long ago, I got a call from my widowed aunt just up the road to "Come here with your gun and kill this big rattlesnake in the yard by my sister's bird feeder!"
When I told her to just let him crawl back into the woods, she replied,
"You don't understand -- my [4', 10", 90-year-old)] sister is headed for the shed -- to get a hoe and try to kill him!

When I arrived, he made the mistake of lifting his head up to see what I was doing.
