Regarding Obama and the 57 figure. I think I know why. He went to school in Hawaii, which was very sensitive to the territories controlled by the mainland. There were 6 or 7 of them at that time—American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Washington, DC, and I forget the rest.
